The Difference

Most Tours Stop At The Sidewalk

The national chains walk you past the buildings and tell you what happened inside. We have the keys.

  • We get inside the Horton Grand, where most Gaslamp tours stop on the sidewalk
  • Interiors at more sites than any other San Diego tour
  • Small groups, so you are a participant and not part of a herd
  • Hosts are working storytellers, not seasonal script readers

Ghostly FAQ

Everything People Ask Before They Book

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call or text 619.255.6170 and a person will pick up.

Do you actually go inside the haunted buildings?

We try every night. The Horton Grand is the usual one, the lobby side and the bar, when it is not too busy, and on lucky nights we get inside the Davis-Horton House. We do not know until the day of.

That is the honest answer, and it is more than most Gaslamp walking tours attempt. These are working historic buildings, so a private event or sudden construction can close a door on the night. We still pay the venues for our access either way, so we cannot discount or refund for a single closed location.

Is the tour scary?

Spooky, not scary. There are no clowns, no monsters, and no jump scares. It is a dark history tour with a haunted twist: real locations, real stories, and genuine atmosphere.

Some reviewers have called it scary anyway. That is the environment doing the work, not us leaping out at you. We also bring heavy tongue-in-cheek humor, puns, and cheesy one-liners inspired by 80s and 90s horror. Bring your sense of humor or this is not your tour.

Do ghosts actually show up?

We cannot produce ghosts and we will never claim we can. Things do happen, they are rare, and we do not know when. A chair rocking with nobody near it. A deep sound lasting thirty seconds with no locatable source, like surround sound coming from everywhere.

Both of those happened to our own web designer across five tours. When he asked the host if they did it, the answer was "no, this is what happens."

Is it appropriate for kids?

The tour is geared to an adult audience and rated roughly PG-13. It contains mildly racy content and some disturbing stories, including the brothels and vice of the old Stingaree, handled lightly rather than graphically.

  • Under 10 is discouraged
  • This is our least kid-friendly tour, because the brothel history of the Stingaree is central to it
  • Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, no exceptions

Kids who handle scary movies fine sometimes struggle here, because standing in the actual building is heavier than watching a screen. If you have doubts, call or text 619.255.6170 and we will talk it through. For a tour genuinely built for children, ask us about the Kids Ghost Investigation.

How much walking is there, and is it accessible?

A little over 1.5 miles, paced at just under 2 hours. It is a brisk walk: you hear the story at the location, then move to the next one. The breaks come toward the end, when we go inside.

  • The route is city sidewalks and curbs, in a district that is busy at night
  • You are on your feet for the full two hours
  • Stops are short, because there are more than 25 of them
  • A wheelchair is more challenging on this route, though it can be doable.

If you have ambulatory concerns, call 619.255.6170 before booking and we will give you a straight answer for your situation.

Is there a minimum number of guests?

Yes. Our tours run on a minimum, and the reason is that we take you inside locations we pay for. A tour that stays on the sidewalk and points at a building can run with whoever turns up. Ours opens doors, and that only works with a group behind it.

It also keeps the group at a size where people talk to each other and the host can perform rather than shout.

If a tour looks unlikely to run, we personally call or text you 3 to 5 hours before departure. Please give us a working phone number you will have on you. You are not charged if the tour does not go.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, and you should. Seats are limited and tours regularly sell out as the day progresses. A tour that looks wide open at noon is often gone by 4pm. About 90% of the time a tour fills the same day.

If you prefer to pay cash, your only option is to show up at the Gaslamp Quarter Arch at least 20 minutes before departure and hope a spot is open. Call or text 619.255.6170 to go on the waitlist, though cancellations are rare and it is a long shot.

Where do we meet, and where do I park?

The Gaslamp Quarter Arch, by the Starbucks and the Hard Rock, at 215 Fifth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Be at the arch 20 minutes before departure, and arrive in the Gaslamp at least 35 minutes early during busy season, because parking is competitive.

There are garages and lots throughout the Gaslamp and most of them charge. SpotHero lets you reserve a space ahead of time and we use it ourselves. Rideshare removes the problem entirely.

No ticket or phone app is needed. Look for your host in Victorian attire, or in black with a bell, and give the ticket buyer's name. There are no bathrooms on the tour, so use the one at Starbucks or the Hard Rock first.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?
  • If we cancel: you are fully and promptly refunded. If you booked through a third party, we contact them immediately to start it.
  • You cancel 24+ hours out: full refund, no hard feelings.
  • Under 24 hours or no-show: all sales are final, the same as a concert or a theater seat.

We are still human. If you have an emergency inside the 24 hour window, call or text 619.255.6170 right away. If we can resell your spot before departure we will happily refund you. The sooner you reach us, the better your odds.

What does "satisfaction guaranteed" actually mean?

Our blend of dark history, theater and grim jokes is not for everyone. If your experience fell short, we refund up to 3 guests in your group under three conditions:

  • Contact us directly before posting a public review, so we get a real chance to fix it
  • Give specific, constructive feedback. "It was boring" does not tell us anything.
  • Reach out within 72 hours of the tour

Once a negative review is posted publicly, refund eligibility ends and we consider the matter closed.

What is the Gaslamp itself like at night?

Downtown is San Diego's nightlife district and this tour runs straight through the middle of it. Three things to expect.

  • It moves. More than 25 locations in two hours means a brisk pace and short stops.
  • The street is part of it. Expect crowds, music and a lively bar scene around you while your host works.
  • It is the most grown-up tour we run. The brothel and vice history of the old Stingaree is central to it, handled lightly rather than graphically.

If you would rather a quieter night, our Old Town walk and the Haunted Bus Tour both cover the history without the downtown nightlife.

Are there discounts?

Use code KARMA when you book direct. If you do not see a code live on the site, call or text 619.255.6170 and we will usually set something up for you. Discounts are not available in September or October.

Larger groups should call the reservation line for group options.

On price honestly: we aim to keep our groups smaller than the big operators run theirs, we pay venues for indoor access, and our hosts are working performers rather than seasonal script readers. That is why we cost more than a tour that takes everyone who shows up and never opens a door.

Should I tip the host?

If you enjoyed the performance, yes. Your host is a trained professional who puts real effort into the night, and tips are a genuine part of how they make their living.
